Sorry if this has been covered (ha, ha!) before.

Some plaster has blown where the flue from our gas fire runs. It's about a foot wide, from just above the fire to the ceiling. It's also in the room above in a similar manner. This won't be a problem in the future, as we're having a flueless fire fitted soon.

I've taken out a chunk of plaster, to see how far it goes, & it appers to be right down to the blockwork (it's grey, so I assume it's concrete blocks). It seems to be 2 layers of plaster - first one about 8mm, top one about 3mm.

I've no problem chiselling out the relevant areas, but I'm dubious about my ability to do the patching.

Basically, is it advisable to use 2 layers of plaster to do the repair, & if so, how do you get the bottom coat the right thickness? I've noticed you can buy 1 coat plaster, or use basecoat & finishing plaster. I'm assuming it needs a coat of pva solution first (?).

Or is it a hideously fiddly job, best left to the professionals?

Thanks in advance!

if this is one of the main focal points to the room i would advise you get a plasterer in.
