We've got the old paving slabs 3'x2' round the house. Old and ugly. Dont like Indian Stone. Any other options?. Dont like the little thin flags as break.. Maybe some modern concrete style 2'x2' but a bit more 21st century?

artificial grass? I put down artificial grass as a temporary patio at the back of the house (used leftover sharp sand and a £120 2m wide strip of grass), and love it. Much nicer than stone.

Now that's a thought. Do you have more infos please?

Well, I just ordered some grass off somebody on Amazon or eBay ... sold it by length, 2m or 4m wide.
Lemme check my emails ... this is the stuff

must have a photo somewhere ....

I didn't really install it expertly, some bumps and dips, I literally just put sand down and made it as flat and level as I could with that bit of wood in the photo! Bought some big nails to hold it down around the edges.

What would be the ideal base for the astraturf??

Ideal, not sure, compacted hardcore probably. Maybe depends on the soil type - if it is pretty firm, then levelling with sand probably ok.
I think a lot of cheap installers just level soil with sand though. I put weed barrier below mine too, don't forget that.

Not helpful to your question i'm afraid but i'm curious what it is about Indian flags that you don't like, purely as you're the first person i've ever seen say that.

Some colours i can totally agree with as they look bloody awful. Then some other colours on the other hand look superb although beauty, eye of the beholder & all that jazz.
