PC fan keeps coming on

I upgraded our PC's memory lately with an extra 2GB and since then the fan comes on a lot more regularly.

Will this be connected with the increase in memory? It certainly didn't happen prior to the memory upgrade

Assuming its a desktop...

As far as I am aware adding extra memory should only increase temp by a small amount and if the slots are there and it can be upgraded the designers would have allowed for any extra heat.

To add the extra memory you will have had to remove the side panels did you a) check and clean any dust out b) check that nothing has got in front of any air vents c) replace the machine in the same position..if its different it may now be too close to the wall/cupboard etc. restricting air flow.

There are usually at least two fans one on the case and one on the Cpu if you accidentally pulled one of the wires off it would mean the other has to work overtime to compensate..having said that if the Cpu fan is not working the machine would normally short down anyway.

it is a desktop, the extra slots where there, so it was just a case of inserting the extra memory.

the case did need a clean which I didn't do! so it may be that I disturbed the dust and its causing the fan to run?

i will clean it out and see it that makes a difference

give the case a hoover out

also if it's still happening take the new memory chip and see if it still does it or not as the memory chip could be faulty
