is it worth putting a pet detector PIR in my utility area? Cat sleeps on the floor but sometimes jumps onto the work top in there. Would a PIR be ok at ceiling height? What do people recommend?

If possible it is advisable to avoid pet friendly pirs.
If they have to be used then a small room such as a utility room is best avoided.
Although pets cannot be detected in normal circumstances where the room is large and pet access to the immediate vicinity (within 2 metres) is restricted cats can climb everywhere and although you suspect your cat jumps on the work top it would come as no surprise to find he/she also sat on top of the wall units too.
Do you have a contact on the door if the utility room has one?
Does that door have a glass panel allowing possible entry without opening the door?
Does the utility room have a window?

If the door of the utilty room is protected then if you can't use a pir within the utility room due to the possibility of the cat setting it off (even a pet friendly one) then make sure the hallway or kitchen or wherever the utility room leads into is protected by a pir or that the door leading from the utility room into the rest of the house has a magnetic contact (If it can be closed,ie a cat flap into the utility room and the utility room door to the home closed would allow use of a magnetic door contact to signal anyone getting into the home via the utility room.)
