I always use just any fuel that seems convenient, and most often this is supermarket fuel. Recently it has been Tesco in Banbury.

A week or so ago, the "Check Engine" light kept coming on, so I took the car to the Kia garage who plugged the computer into it, and it came up with "Knock Sensor". The mechanic mentioned about the fuel. When we switched the engine back on the light was off and it carried on being intermittent like this for a while.

I let the tank run very low then went to a BP garage and filled it with the high grade fuel they have (104.9p/l - phew!). The car feels nicer and quieter to drive and the light hasn't come on once.

What's all that about then?

Sounds like your car's ECU is not able to adjust properly between RON 95 and RON 98, I'd guess that the timing is not adjusting properly and you aer getting some pinking with the lower octane unleaded (RON 95)

sounds like there is something amiss with your engine. They are usually made to cope with varying quality fuels throughout the world, and yours, if modern, probably has automatic adjustment to cope with low-octane fuel.

But the worst petrol that is available in the UK is likely to be way above minimum standards that your car should handle.

bah, too slow

OK thank you.

@EddieM: I don't know what ECU is.

I haven't had a problem up to now and have always used the "cheaper" petrol. This has happened just this one time.

ECU Engine control unit (or some such variant) black box, thingy ! Replace the knock sensor, this is an easy DIY job. Replacment ECU ££££'s not a DIY job :(
