My automatic gearbox has a few manual low gears and also a button with an ice symbol on it. I don't have the manual so can't check what this is for and how best to use it. With the icy weather and a long journey ahead I'm thinking these may come in useful but don't want use them wrong. Any ideas?

Your 206 auto has gears that can be locked if needed - in other words, keep it in 1 and it won't change, likewise in 2, 3 or 4 the box won't change up higher. Keep it in D for normal driving. The ice symbol is an ignition retarder which is supposed to minimise wheel spin.

At risk of sounding immensely dumb, how do I use the ignition retarder? Do I press is at the start of the journey?

If you feel that your journey is likely to be slippy, press the ice button and it will help with traction a bit - but don't kid yourself that it will make any real difference! The big asset to safety on ice is ABS brakes and slowing down in plenty of time, together with enough momentum to get you up hills too. Living on the the top of a hill in Northumberland has much going for it but there are winter problems - the number of cars in ditches etc at the start of every winter is ridiculous. If you have no grip on ice then hook a wheel onto the grass verge - there's a certain amount of grip to be had there.
Take care
John :)

other autos i have driven, the ice button stops it using 1st gear, the locks locked the highest, ie 1, stays in tst, 2nd changes between 1st n 2nd.
the ice locked it out of 1st, so you took off n 2nd, reducing the chance of wheel spin.
