Peugeot 306 intermittant fault

I've got a 1997 P reg Peugeot 306, and for the past 2 years it has had an intermittant fault where it cuts out whilst I am driving. It has been to the garage on many occasions where I have been told it has been solved, yet within a few hours it has cut out again. If anybody has heard about this, can anybody help?

I had a similar problem some years back with a car. It turned out to be a dodgy immobiliser - but very frightening when you are overtaking something and your engine dies
