peugeot 406 diesel hdi fault problem

hi i have a peugeot 406 diesel. the engine management light stays on. i had diagnostic check done at a garage.... and they told me that the e.g.r valve has gone.. on driving home from work today i noticed that when i changed down in the gears and tried to accelerate away i found the car car had a lack of power.. is this egr valve causing the problem. and how easy is it to do help

Access is pretty poor on these...can I recommend you google to find a picture of the thing so you know what you are looking for?
Also check that the rubber pipe that works the thing is in place, and not split.
Its much better to replace these components rather than just clean them, I find.
