Just returned from my holiday abroad where my very well maintained 2002 Peugeot Boxer developed a strange sound from the engine with a slight loss of power. Took it to a large garage near me for a look see and they instantly diagnosed a leaking injector. Visible because of leaking diesel and the 'hissing' sound. They could not fix for a week so i got my mechanic to have a look. He dismantled the injector, fitted a new copper washer and the sound still remains. He suggested its the head gasket. Now, my mechanic is near retirement and bless him but everything is an effort for him and even when he changes a bulb he sucks air in through his teeth which is why im here for further advice. I thought that if a head gasket has gone this would lead to over heating. Is this correct? My van never overheats and is still running very well indeed, albeit with a small loss of power. I have never had a head gasket changed and have no idea whats involved or costs. I really cannot ask him as he would make it sound like armageddon! Is it worth repairing? He also mentioned something about valve damage. Sorry for long listing, hope someone can help.

If its making a knocking noise it will most likely be an injector but ideally you need to take it to a diesel specialist, they are usually know what they are doing and are cheaper. Alternatively you could get a secondhand injector from ebay for not to much money and try changing them over.

If you have head gasket problems you will be loosing coolant and unless it has failed completely that's all you will notice.

Its a popular misconception that a leaking head gasket causes the engine to overheat, it doesn't, what causes the overheating is the the resulting pressure in the cooling system blow out the coolant - then it overheats.

Injector only

Can be expensive, but nothing compared to a head gasket and definitely worth fixing.

Might be worth giving your mechanic another chance, leave it with him, no one likes to work with the customer hovering? Suggest softening the washer with heat (annealing). And rechecking the sealing surfaces/re-tighten. If you put a liquid round the injector you should see if the washer is still the cause. It will bubble straight away, after starting. Are you still down on power, and the diesel leak, fixed?

If its not a job he wants to do, get a price from the guys that diagnosed it for you?

Unfortunately non of us are getting any younger
