hi, have a pick axe that did have a fibreglass shaft, it cracked when digging out clay and stone so now have a wood shaft but that keeps working loose, anybody any ideas on how to tighten it? tried hitting it on concrete but it still works loose. thanx
rabu - the traditional way of fitting handles to 'impact' tools such as hammers, axes, etc. was, in addition to use of wedges, to soak the head/shaft interface with linseed oil. This has the effect of swelling the wooden shaft/handle. Pick-axes tend not to have wedges but rely on the tapered head of the shaft fitting, as a force fit, into the tapered socket of the tool. I suspect your problem is linked to slightly differing tapers. Compare the taper on the wooden handle end with that of the fibreglass one and maybe 'adjust' the wooden one to match for a snug fit.
