As Click Sure says it's very common and only found when a kitchen is changed (10 years or so) or if there is a fault. Unfortunately the protagonist is long gone by then.

You've not found the obligitory choc-blocks wrapped in tape and rammed into their old box, peice of cardboard then tiles over the top yet then.

Found 6 interconnections in a ring this way, a personal best!


It could have been worse (or should I say wasp)

 
I removed the double on the left & replaced the single with a double all wired correctly.

Its just typical of the wiring I have been finding in this house.
