Hi. I've decided to keep pillar between door and window at 450mm on rear extension.

The door is 1300mm. Window is going to be 1500mm wide.

My question can the pillar be made of single blocks on one another. Or is it best to cut them in 1/3 and 3/4 and then build like brickwork?.

Cheers

Technically it should be another 17mm wider.
Additional wall ties are required.
  • Change the wall tie pattern around openings such as windows, doors, roof verges and movement joints. Here the vertical spacing is reduced to a maximum 300mm and should be within 225mm of the opening. So realistically, that’s a wall tie every course of blocks within 225mm of the opening, which means you need to carefully cut (and clip) the insulation.

The pillar is equivalent to single block length. So will stack one block on another.

Will use wall ties on each one.

How would I achieve extra 17mm. Blocks are 440mm wide.

Cheers

What about in the real world?
I know at least 3 BCO's who would insist on this, fortunately 2 of them have retired in recent years. Myself and 2 of my colleagues used to submit plans in the adjacent LA where one of them worked, used to have us tearing our hair out !!! Example: 4060mm long brick wall knocked back on the 1/3, 2/3 rule as the opening sizes exceeded the 2/3 rule by half a brick. one of the openings was only 483W x 750H window, I would just ignore it completely myself.

Most likely would be ignored unless your unlucky see above.

That's not written down by whoever wrote the text book.

You could use two cut blocks to make up the extra 17mm, but then 10mm of that is a joint, with 7mm of extra block. But then you have a weak pier because of the joint. Oh damn.

Or you could by something like Durox blocks which are 620mm long and cut them down. Brilliant. Oh, except they are different to all the other blocks, and will have different thermal and adhesive properties which cause problems for render. But above all they are crap.

Or you could build it in bricks. Nice and strong, but again different thermal properties.

Or you could think "17mm?". Laugh, and then forget it.

What is this 2/3 & 1/3 rule?

door opening is 135cm and window will be 150cm wide.

Internally the width is 4.27m.

66.7% opening. Does that mean I'm within or out of the rule according to the strict Bco?

Outer skin I'm with in. (y)

Is it 17mm or 27mm as I mentioned 450mm pillar initially but blocks are 440mm.

17mm or 27mm - makes no difference - still OK.
If it was a narrow pier beween two doors (instead of between a window and a door) that would be a different matter.
