pine fire surround

Hello everyone,
First post so be kind,
Ive got some left over pine sleepers from a garden project would these be suitable to make a fire surround. What is the best way to get them sanded/planed,and what is the best way to treat them after ie waxed stained etc etc

Could be used but will need a couple of months indoors to allow for shrinkage due to heating first.
