One thing that puzzles me about using pipe freezing machines is what stops the pipe from rupturing in the same way that pipes can rupture when exposed to outside cold temperatures? Anyone know?
As you only freeze a very small section of the pipe the expansion, which starts as water drops below 4°C, can be taken up along the axis (length) of the pipe. If, however, the entire length of the pipe were frozen then most of the expansion would occur in a radial direction, and burst the pipe.
If along a length of pipe (say 2m apart), the machine is used to isolate by forming ice plugs, there is a good chance that the pipe will rupture between the plugs. Has happened to me!!
Hi DP what were you doing that you needed to use the pipe freezing machine for? Has it ever happened to you when freezing two pipes to remove a radiator?
