HI all, i have browsed the forums looking for answers, i see a lot of people plugging these lights at 150w, and i was wondering if i could do the same with a 500w? here listed in the pics are what i have got.. and it should show the specs, i am competent enough to wire, just unsure about lighting circuits, ( im more into wiring plugs and computer parts.

the question is thus,:- is this unit safe to wire into a standard plug with a 3-5amp fuse using the wire i have, including a drip loop?

and :- can i also if i wanted wire this unit into the light socket with the 2 switch unit so i can have the hall light and the outside secutity light on separate switches? if so ( sorry for being a lighting nub) how the hell do i do it as there seems to be to meny wires:) )

Here is what i have got.. ( ps ignore date on the pictures i forgot to set new date.)

OK,
You could connect the PIR lamp into a 13A plug fused at 3A.

The terminals on the connection block are marked L (Brown) N (Blue) and earth (green/yellow).

OK so far?

Connecting the light to your light switch is another level of complexity.

I guess you already have just one switch that does the hall light.

For your security light to work we need to find the live and neutral feed and this may (or may not) be in that switch.

We need a pic of the switch and the cables that connect to it.

Can advise more once you've posted back.

oki cheers. now i can wire it into the plug if necessary here is a pic of the open light socket. Is the 1.5 mm twin and earth cable ok if i wite it into a plug ( just incase?)

wires look weird:)

any help is appreciated.

The 1.5mm cable is fine.

As I suspected, there is no neutral at your light switch. But I am wondering if there is something behind that light switch back plate.

If you unscrew it from the wall you should be able to see the actual cables themselves. Is there a bunch of black wires there? those may be the neutral connections. If not you would have to run a cable to the nearest light fitting where a neutral may be located.

had a look, there is just another set of red cables that go up into the wall heading towards the light, and thats it. , oki that solves that problem i shall wire it in via the plug socket..
thanks for your help:)

:D

can you recomend a cable then for outside usage to be wired into a 13 amp ( 3 amp fuse ) plug and ill get some tomorrow morning..

Well if you are putting the light on a 13 amp plugtop then i would suggest blue Artic flex 1.5mm 3-core. Make sure to fit a 3amp fuse in the plugtop though and clip the flex neatly on the wall so it looks good.

twin and earth is not designed to be wired into a plug..

it's also oval so will make a poor seal in the gland if terminated straight into the light.. you'll get rain in it ...

arctic flex is not needed in this instance..
arctic flex is used only where the cable needs to remain flexible at low temperatures and is mainly used for extension leads / caravan hook ups..

any regular 1.0 or 1.5mm flex will be fine.. ( 500W is a little over 2 amps.. )

Buy a cheap extension lead, replace the fuse with a 3A one, cut the reel/sockets off the other end and wire it into the light.

I'll wager it'll be the cheapest way to buy flex at a DIY shed... :)
