I’ve had some felt put on my roof and it is an old pitched roof that has slates on it. My roofer has insisted that I do not need an eaves tray because of the particular slates, is this correct/has anyone had work completed without installing one?

I would’ve thought an eaves continuous slate course would have made the roofers job easier.

What is the detail at the eaves?
Does you house have a fascia or is it open rafter feet?

What was the original,detail

There are some pro roofers that sometimes comment on here so hopefully one will be along soon

Do not necessarily accept what your tradesman has told you….they often have a hidden agenda.

Thank you for commenting, much appreciated.
I’m not entirely sure so I’d best do some more digging!

Thus far, he has removed the slates and old battens, laid down the Juta Maxi 132 Breather Membrane (1M wide), and installed new battens onto the existing rafters. From my understanding and google search, I don’t think I have a fascia? Please see image attached where you can see my neighbours roof as mine is obstructed, are you able to tell if I have one?

Trays should be fitted as they not only deal with membrane rotting into the gutter, but they also support the membrane along the eaves to prevent it sagging.

However whether they must be fitted, would be down to the slate manufacturer. As the roofer has mentioned the "particular slates", then check with the manufacturer.

Either way its good practice to fit them if they can be fitted.

I always fit them, also helps to make sure the water ends up in the gutter!
Can't see any need not to fit them except being a tight arse.

I was told you don’t fit eave support trays on slate roofs as I have an eaves slate.
Further to my pitched roof work, I’m having new dakea windows fitted and was told a RUC won’t be needed and he has not had to fit these in previously, has anyone else done work without these and had 0 issues?

Roofing underfelt collar I believe RUC stands for.
I’m wondering if either this along with the absence of an evaes tray, will I be able to install these later down the line now they haven’t been done? Has anyone had a “decent” outcome without them?

As "woody " says as long as he uses good quality modern felt then it's not a necessity. Have had 2 properties without eaves trays only 1 had a problem with the cheap old felt rotting and that was after 25 years.

Thank you. That felt in question is
Juta Maxi 132 Breather Membrane 1M

That should be fine I used that or similar over 35 years ago on a bungalow that I still live near and never seen anyone working on the roof.

Thanks guys! Anyone know anything about roofing underfelt collar?
