I'd like to get some wood cut to a plan that I've drawn up. Are there places that will do this sort of thing? The kind of place I'm thinking of is a machine shop that will accept dxf computer files of whatever pattern you'd like cut and they just ask you what type of wood and thickness you'd like?

Is this possible?

Advice and suggestions much appreciated.

Many timber suppliers will cut material to the dimensions you specify; some also offer machining services (such as for example, Avon Plywood near where I live).

You'll have to search to find firms near where you live who offer the services you want, find out in what format they will accept orders, and what minimum quantities they deal in for this sort of service.

Thanks for the reply xerxes.

That place looks exactly what I am after. I'm having real trouble finding a similar place in my area (Croydon/London) What are these places usually called? All I can find are loads of plain old timber merchants? What should I be using to narrow my search?

Gizmo, give South London Hardwoods a call, they are in Selhurst.

They can cut panels, plane sawn timber and machine mouldings. Not sure if they can accept your file format but drop off a hard copy or scan/fax it to them and I'm sure they will help. They also have their own joinery works - JSM Joinery.

Ask for Sean, thats who I usually deal with. I've had about £3500 of hardwood of them in the last couple of months, tell him Jason Ballamy sent you and maybe I will get a bit off my next order ;)

gizmo - look for CNC wood cutting (or machining), or CAD/CAM. CNC stands for computer-numerical-control & CAD/CAM for computer-aided- design/computer-aided-machining. As .dxf is an Autocad file (Autocad being essentially the 'industry' standard drafting software) you shouldn't have any problems.
