I was asked to plant a fuschia on a recent grave. When I got there the surface was pure broken chalk. I presume the ground is a thin layer of topsoil and turf on a chalk hill (though it also has established trees) and when it settles, it will be levelled with soil and turf.

For the moment I have trowelled a 10" hole and packed it in with old garden compost.

What else can be done?

john, not much more you can do if its pretty pure chalk. think of it in the same way as a plant container. just remove as much as you can and backfill with a mix of compost and soil
