Hi all,
I've had some damp problems upstairs in my house recently which I've more or less sorted now (caused by people showering without opening the window, drying a lot of clothes without ventilation etc). It caused the wallpaper around the windows to become damp and come away.

Today I decided to reseal one of the windows as much of the silicone sealant was coming away and it looked dreadful. I pulled some of the plastic trim off to find that the plaster underneath (and in turn wallpaper) was incredibly brittle and falling off.

What can I do about this? I don't want to replaster the whole room as most of the plaster is solid from what I can gather. I have also never done any plastering in my life.

Pictures may help here, is the problem limited to the reveals of the window?

A picture I just took...

The bit I'm showing you is along the top of the window. Excuse the large gaps, that's just where I've removed the plastic trim.

As you can see, the plaster is coming away but most of it is sound, it's just a few chunks. The problem is only limited to the reveals of the window as the rest of the room is fine too so I'm not sure how to go about sorting this one small bit before I put up new plastic trim and reseal.

buy some wider cloak trim and stick it on with silicone.

You recommend I simply ignore the now missing few chunks of plaster? (they fell off after I took the picture so nothing is loose now )

depends..

is it your house? rented. are the windows new, is the damaged plaster from old.

and if your damp problem is cosmetic or serious.

As stated, get some make up trim, cut the wall paper back to where the trim will end and stick in place with silicone.

Yep its my house, not rented or anything. The damp problem is just cosmetic now. It's caused some visible mould in the corners of the room but I plan to redecorate it when I next have time off. It's only a small spare room so not a big deal at the moment.

The windows are a few years old now (about 5 or 6 I think). The plaster is old, it's the same stuff that was there when I moved in back in 1997.

John, I think I will do just that for now, I will get some wider trim tomorrow and silicone it. Hopefully more plaster won't come off when I cut the paper back. It will need repapering soon anyway as you can see in the photo.
