I'm just interested in some professional thoughts on which type of gypsum plaster works BEST with which surface and why i.e.

Browning on thermalite blocks?,

Bonding on brickwork?,

Hardwall on concrete? etc

(I know it tells you on the bag but I'm interested in your first hand experiences and any stories to go with them)

Also what are the likely outcomes if you used the wrong type on the wrong surface i.e goes off before you can rule it properly etc?
(long and short term)

I know that Browning, bonding and finish are often used.

Use one as a filler , the finish is used for a good finish funnily enough.

Preparation of the area you are to plaster is probably more important if you want the plaster to stay on the wall.

Then theres special plaster that should be used for areas that have been damproofed.

However I aint a plasterer, must be someone around that can help.

Cheers for your reply Wayne,

I actually do plastering but I just wanted to start a discussion as this kind of topic seems to come up alot on this site with numerous different views and I thought it might be interesting to get some stories etc

It does sound like a good thread to get going, why not start it off with what you prefer/use?

I'm not a plaster - well I did a little on a few places in my house - but would be interested to know too.

It would also be great to get a few more 'sticky' threads up to cover some of the basics...

Cheers all.

Most of my work is renovation and onto standard brick which has a low suction so I mostly use thistle bonding and then multi finish for the top coats.

What ever happened to Carlite Bonding and Finish???

I prefer multi finish when skimming plaster board as it just seems to go on (and off) better than board finish.

I use browning if going onto thermalite (aireated concrete) blocks as they suck moisture like a 50 year old whore, then skim with multi finish.

What's the best backing for medium and high density concrete blocks? I have used bonding (having PVA'd the wall first) but am I right in thinking Hardwall is more suitable???

Years ago when I was a labourer I knocked up tonnes and tonnes of Hardwall (in a bath with a shovel) for 2 spreads to go onto solid concrete walls (very low suction and little natural key) but md and hd blocks obviously have more suction and key? So Bonding or Hardwall :?: Thats what I'd like to discuss I guess!!
