hi,new on this site and would some help if possible.l had a ceiling leak and have to take a 3ft square section out. l know you take the cuts to the next joists and cut in half that width,but how do you get straight cuts.you cannot saw because it,s onto a joist,l have tried a stanley knife but it,s too thick. any ideas please

Easier and quicker to cut back flush to the joist and a square timber noggins screw to the side of the joist. Be careful not to cut any wiring/pipe.
 
cheers,l will try that.Also if you can help is it easy enough to plaster this small section and what plaster is best to use.
 
Use Self Adhesive Plasterboard Repair Tape to tape the joint, see here

I'm not sure what is the best plaster to use but someone here will know.
