I have a mate who is Plasterboarding a room out, he is erecting studding both on the walls and the ceilings. He wants to be able to fix the plasterboard wherever he wishes, not just along the joists. For the walls he plans to put Tongue&groove Chipboard up first, but he is not sure what to use on the Ceiling. I dont think there is anything on the market that is specific for this but was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations or had done it themselves? Thanks.

He's talking rubbish. Tell him not to bother. It'll be a disaster.

There's a good reason why there's nothing on the market for this ;)

The only situation where it is possible is where the existing ceiling is of plaster and lath construction, and is left in place. Then you run a reasonable chance of screwing into the lath.

Out of interest, why do you, er your friend, wish to do it this way?

i can't see a sensible reason to do this?

just fix the plasterboard the way it's meant to be, bound edges at 90 degrees to the joists/timbers and cut edges fixed onto joists/timbers and boards bonded like brickwork.

why go to the extra effort of fixing all that chipboard!?!?
