Plasterboarding over ceiling...help please :)

Hi to all you plasterers,

Iv done a 5day course in plastering so have learnt the basics, but they dont really teach you "real world" situations regards to plastering.

Im looking to plasterboard over a ceiling thats in pretty naf condition coulsd you please give tips on the following:
1 - best way to find joists
2 - once the plaster board is up do i need to skrim in the very edges (where ceiling meets wall) because i was taught to overlap the skrim with the ceiling and wall, but im not skimming the walls..

Sorry i know its a little long winded but any help would be appreciated..

Hi Clarky I would get a bit of practice in on some walls and get used to the materials and tools that you will be using before you tackle any ceilings... Good Luck,,,,

Absolutely what Roy said,,, and what type of ceiling is it in "naf condition"? lath and plaster, plasterboard?

ooh you guys! valid points i have to agree.

in addition to the above help, use a hammer to find the joists, or even a cordless drill, drill holes along the ceiling edge, you'll know when you hit a joist, mark the centre and repeat along both edges, then use a chalk line and snap lines across the ceiling.

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips on finding the joists. I have actually done a fair bit of plastering since my course...boths walls and ceilings and iv had good finishing results each time, so i would like to think i have an idea of what im doing...iv just never plasterboarded over an existing ceiling before!!! Thats why iv come here for the advice... as for the ceiling its a lath plaster...cheers guys

Please be careful when using a drill to find joists - when I took my hall ceiling down, I found the mains gas pipe resting between the joists in the gap!

the DIY sheds and others sell joist and/or cable finders. Are these any use for finding joists? perhaps even any recommendations on good ones?
