I've removed all the old plaster from my chimney breast in my semi-detached and am going to board it out and plaster it. I was thinking also to board the party wall either side of the chimney breast without removing the old plaster thereby creating an extra layer of heat/sound insulation across the wall to next door. I don't want to spend a lot of money on this so it will be done with standard board/adhesive. The question is - should I dot and dab the adhesive on to the old plaster or would it be better to use a notched trowel and apply a continuous bed of adhesive across the whole surface of the board/wall? Which method would provide better heat/sound insulation?

If the old plaster is sound, just dot'n'dab as normal. If base plaster is not sound, then that should also be removed or the board adhesion will in time fail.

Standard PB won't offer much in terms of heat resistance, I would use a thermaline board (which is usually lighter) it has a layer of polystyrene on it. For the area you want covering I can't see it being much more expensive.

There's also a third option of fix foaming, I've done this myself and it's a lot easier than dot and dabbing. You can buy the cans on their own, spray the foam on the wall making sure to have an even spread as you would dot and dabbing. It's also more likely to bond to dusty/dirty surfaces than normal adhesive in my experience, what is more if you miss an area you can come back later, drill a hole through the PB and squirt in foam to stiffen it up
