Plasterboarding under existing (asbestos) garage ceiling?

I have a 1930s house. It was apparently extended in the 1970s, including an integral garage with a bedroom above it. There's no ceiling insulation in the garage and, as a result, nor is there any sound-proofing.

"Asbestolux" type board was clout-nailed(!) to the garage ceiling joists when it was built. The boards are in good condition.

I've previously sealed the ceiling boards with PVA solution.

I've now screwed (carefully and gently with good, long, sharp screws) 4"x2" battens to the ceiling, through the ceiling boards into the joists -I painted PVA onto the battens where I drilled the pilot holes to help prevent fibres escaping when screwing.

I've put loft insulation between the battens (this has made a big difference to the sound-proofing) and intend to plasterboard underneath. Ideally I'd leave the boards un-skimmed, tape the joints and paint with white emulsion. Would this be adequate?

I'm aware of there sometimes being a requirement for double boarding, skimming etc.etc. for fire regs, but in this case there is an existing fire layer left in place.

Would anything other than plasterboard be suitable?

Any thoughts?

Cheers

With asbestos in place, I doubt double boarding or fire-ling would improve the integrity of the fire resistance.
Might be worth considering vapour check barrier though.

Just a point to mention - if you knowingly hide asbestos in your home by covering it up etc, you are legally bound to inform any future purchasers of the property of its whereabouts.

Its not illegal, just illegal not to tell them.
