Hi there

I need some advice about plastering.

Four months ago my neighbour had a leak in his kitchen which left part of his kitchen wall and my adjoining kitchen wall damp. While I'm pretty confident that he has irradiated the source of the leak, the wall hasn't dried out completely and the plaster is blown. The wall is still damp enough that if you paint it, the paintwork blisters within 24 hours.

My neighbour is refusing to do any replastering in his house - he says it will dry out. If I replaster my side of wall, will the damp in my neighbour's side of the wall make its way back to my side? Is there anything I can do to avoid this happening?

Many thanks

the wall will release efflorescent salts, usually in the form of a chrystaline white powder. don't bother decorating until all the salts are gone from the masonry or the wall is totally dry. you should not try and prevent this release.
