Have a small area of plasterboard, about 1 square metre. PVAed it 1:1, let it dry and then had a go at putting plaster on. From reading other posts my mistake was to try and use old plaster as it became unworkable about 2 minutes after mixing (both in the bucket and on the wall!). The result is nowhere near smooth or fully covered, but I managed to keep it below the desired thickness.

If I go and buy some in date finishing plaster am I ok to put it directly on top of the current mess? Am not after perfect results, as I'll put lining paper over it if it looks aweful, but I don't want it to fall off the wall.

Hi,
Better to try and make a reasonable job of it,because even with lining paper on,it will still look a mess if the wall is rough underneath the paper.

Totally agree, but I wanted to keep my expectations realistic on a first attempt. Even second attempt with a proper plaster mix I found it difficult to build a smooth coating on top of the previous uneven one. More practice needed! :)

I'll have to mount a sheet of plasterboard in the garage and get some practice in now I have about 20kg of plaster left to play with.
