Hello, we have had some new wall lights installed by a qualified electrician. Some of the old wall lights have been removed and they have joined up the wires and pushed them back into the wall with some tape around them to keep them safe. The new wall lights are in different locations so they have run new wires to where they now are behind the wall, and joined them back to where the old ones are.

I am now ready to repair the holes, do i need to do anything other than filling over the cables and connections?

Thank you

If those cables are live you cant just plaster over them I assume they aren't in a safe zone, they need to be pulled up into the ceiling and joined properly.

So he wasn't a qualified electrician then as he shouldn't have left the cables like that. Get him back to do it properly.

Oh dear, so is this not correct the way it has been done?

There is no access to the ceiling above so what would be the best way to sort this out?

The normal way to do this is set a back box in the wall to enclose the connections and then use a blank plate to cover that. In this way the cable zone is easily identified.

I don't think a competent spark would leave it as it has been.

Thank you for everyone's advice, the electrical company was recommended and they have a website.

I'm quite worried now, is this work unsafe? should I turn off the power until it can be fixed?

You need to address your concerns to them in writing and see what they say

Having a website doesn’t say much these days

I don't feel comfortable posting the link the website on the forum, sorry.

I have spoken to them and they have said its okay to cover up the wires and its normal practice because they are maintain free.

So even though its not strictly correct per the book, it sounds like it will be okay to cover them up?

They have suggested to make a note of where the wires are that are covered so they don't get damaged in the future.

I'm not keen on having ugly boxes on my walls so would like to avoid this if it is safe to cover them.

Realisticly whats the worste that will happen?

They have suggested to make a note of where the wires are that are covered so they don't get damaged in the future.

That seems to confirm that they are not a professional company. Notes get lost but faceplates covering the joints do not get lost.

Also maintenance free connectors must be inside a box and not just tucked into a hole.

But what is the worst that will happen if I fill in the holes?

I asked a plumber friend I know too and they said it would be fine.
