Hi. We have a plastered area covering the underneath of the stairs in what was originally the kitchen but is now part of the dining room (1920s terrace). I assume it has cracked simply from use of the stairs but was wondering whether it is likely to need hacking out and completely redoing or can be repaired. Is there any alternative to plastering it over like this ?

Do you have winders or a quarter turn landing above?
The cracking might be due to insufficient support to the stair carcassing (timbers)?
After removing the lower supporting framing it can be surprisingly difficult to properly support whats left.
Sometimes, a steel is inserted to give a fixed point.
If the job was done some years ago then it should last for a few more, and you could fill the crack, tape over and skim with whatever.

To be cautious, you could cut a peep-hole in the bulkhead, and view behind for any defects?
