i'm make a breeders quality whelping box for dogs. therefore in needs to be washed and used regularly what would be the best sort of matarial to use and cost effective. i was thinking of putting aluminium channel on edges to make it wear resistant and chew resistant on the edges. any other ideas

Formica-laminate covering exterior grade ply, I'd say, and make sure that you laminate both sides of the material. This is not going to be all that cheap, though, so you might like to consider melamine-faced MDF (MF-MDF) which is use a lot in the shop abd club fitting trades. It's not waterproof, so you'll need to silicone seal caulk every joint, but it's much cheaper than using plywood/laminate and it will withstand abuse much better than MFC (melamine-faced chipboard).
