I have a very basic knowledge so please bear with me. I’m trying to swap over a light switch to a more decorative one but can’t seem to get it to work properly. The switch is used to control my 2 living room lights. I have attached some pics and a crude drawing so the wiring can be seen in more detail. I have basically wired the new switch as the old one was with the L1 and L2 wires, but the new switch has a COM port instead of an L3 that the old switch had. What can I do to remedy this?

Don't forget that your earth conductors need to be moved to the switchplates earth terminal.

COM = L1
L1 = L2
L2 = L3

So, ignore the marks and look at the triangles. The switches are exactly the same.
And the front metall plate needs to be earthed too. Either move the existing from the back box if they're long enough or and a link wire from back box to front.

EDIT: Beaten by Terry while making tea.

Thanks for the good pictures and drawing, it always helps us.

Thank you all so much. Problem solved and lights working as they should be. That’s me in the good books with the Mrs for a wee while at least
