I am going to fit a plywood ceiling in a small bathroom. It is plasterboard at present and to save unleashing 30 years of dust and muck by taking it down I want to fix the ply to either the plasterboard or through the board to the joists.

There will be only five boards 20 x 145cm so would it be Ok to fix just to the plasterboard with plasterboard plugs or should I find the joists and either screw through the board into them or maybe screw battens into the joists and them screw the ply to the battens ?

Thanks for any help aand advice

Someone who knows what they are talking about will be along in a minute...

But, whatever you do, don't just fix into the plasterboard ceiling - there lies madness!

Do you know which way the joists run?
If perpendicular to boards, screw through into joists.
If parallel to boards, you should fit battens.
