Having my bathroom re-done at the moment. As seems common, my sub-floor is 18mm T&G chipboard. I need to cut some areas out for access to the radiator pipes and to make a repair - boards are nailed down, rather than screwed. As the floor creaks where a couple of the joints are, I also want to sort this before I get some new lino laid.
As I see it, I have a couple of options:
Replace like with like, but using far more screws than is currently the case, glueing the joints and using noggins between joists. However, I'm concerned about the squeaking returning at a later date.
Or, using 18mm plywood to replace the chipboard. I can't, however, replace all the chipboard as some of the sheets run under the wall into the en-suite next door and I'd have to take up all the tiles in there. So is it a problem to butt ply up against chipboard?
Any views one way or the other (or another way!) would be welcome.
