Pointing problem

Have to repoint gable end wall but some bricks laid so close that it will be very difficult to point vertical joints successfully. Gap is sometime 5mm or less. Have heard two suggestions a) Grind away some brick to make wider gap,
And b) where gap is very narrow, just fill with clear silicone.

Both suggestions unattractive. Any ideas?
