On furniture, if you stain wood and polish it, it'll be very difficult, if not impossible, to apply varnish on top of the polish. Wax Polishes tend to seal wood with a temporary barrier.

I'm an amateur DIYer and, at the risk of teaching Granny to suck eggs, what I do with great success is:

Why French polish when I can get abetter more resilient finish using something like Ronseal polyurethane varnish (I prefer gloss - no waxing/polishing required):
Sand as smooth as pos and remove all dust.
Wipe down with white spirit. and allow to dry.
Stain if reqd.
Using a good quality brush (no loose bristles) apply varnish/lacquer thinned 10% with white spirit (or whatever the lacquer is based on).
Apply first coat and allow to dry.
Lightly sand and clean off with a lint free cloth soaked in white spirit/thinner.
Apply subsequent coat(s) as reqd without sanding.
Very light final sand (use a fine wet/dry)
Finish off with a final thinned coat.

Yes, it's labour and time intensive but worth it in the end.
If pos do all sanding in a different area to that where your applying the varnish.

You can then sit back and admire your work.

Bit late now, but what are you polishing?

Varnish and wax are two different products. Varnish is more a lacquer and therefor both cannot be used together (after one is applied, the other can't).

With what kind of product (lacquer, oil, colour wax) was the floor stained?

it was stained with oil based product, i think, ronseal, have just finsihed the second coat of satin varnish on it

OK
then use maintenance for varnish (lacquer) finish, not wax. The wax will not penetrate the varnish/lacquer layer.
