Hello All,
Sorry for asking for help on my first post, but I need some help as to how to make my fireplace safe/suitable for long term use.
We've built a house in Poland and having always wanted an open fire, ordered a cast-iron fireplace with stone mantel. The builders fitted it, but did it ... in a Polish way.
I hope you can follow the diagram.
From the reading I've done, the problem (one of many I'm sure) is the empty space behind the cast-iron fireplace (which is an all-in-one piece) and the back wall which is covered with rockwool.
From what I understand, if this isn't filled in, the cast-iron fireplace will burn through. So I'll have to back fill this with bricks first, leaving a 2" gap and then fill in with vermiculite (or sand more then likely as I don't think it is available/haven't seen vermiculite in Poland).
Would I have to back fill up to the level of the damper plate, or to the level of the removable plate which I assume is for the collection of soot? Or would I have to build up the sides leaving a channel in the middle for the soot collection?
The fireplace is already in situ, so I'd have to do all this using the empty spaces (the damper plate and removable back) to do this
Sorry for the rambling nature of the post, just have a lot of questions...
