Could anyone please explain from a painters point of view what is wrong or undesirable about painting new plaster that has been really trowelled off to a highly polished finish by the plasterer.

I had new plaster the other week and he really polished up the finish and seemed quite proud of it! After leaving it to thoroghly dry out I sealed it by brush with Blue Hawk plaster primer then rolled on several coats of slightly thinned Dulux Rich Matt and didn't seem to have a problem. Or will it all start to peel soon! - Just curious.

I think you've more or less answered your own question! Assuming the paint is fully dry, try sticking a piece of selotape on the surface & then peeling it off to see if the paint easily comes away with the selotape; even so you may be OK but weather or not it will start to flake off in time with little or no encouragement, only time will tell.
