Porch Considerations

Our neighbours have just had their old uPVC porch replaced. It looks very smart and makes our old one seem even dirtier and grubbier than normal.

We were planning on replacing ours with dwarf brick walls and a pitched roof. But after seeing theirs we are starting to have second thoughts.

Currently our porch measures 2.2m by 0.9m. This would be extended out to approximately 1.3m to bring the area up to 3m².
This would involve extending the party wall between us, and a new door between the porch and hallway.

My questions are thus:

1. What thickness of walls are used to build up dwarf walls for porches? I'm just trying to understand how much floor space we'll end up with afterwards.
2. Does anyone have a rough cost? I've seen an estimate of 3.5k online, but I don't know how realistic this is?

Why second thoughts?

We are just building one, I did the foundations myself and it cost be £1000 on top to get the bricks done (although I have loads left).

We were quoted £1200 for the plastics with a very basic glass door and the guy had told me to sit down when the revised price comes with Solidor London door. Hoping the price will come today.

The wall is 9” thick with a thin bit of insulation between the outer bricks and under blocks. £3500 should be plenty unless you have a really fancy door.

Why second thoughts?

Hum!? Did I not say? My second thoughts are to go with an new uPVC porch or replace with brick? In the end I think I will always regret sticking with uPVC. It's just I'm not sure of the cost differences or how much space will be lost inside.

Even though this is a DIY site, I'm not DIYing this! Unfortunately I just don't have the time to complete anything.

9" is similar to what I've read before, so it's good to have confirmation from someone doing the same thing.
At least we'll only lose that on one side, as the other is the party wall.

If it is a fully enclosed porch i.e part of the house, I think the external walls should be 102mm facing brick outer skin,100mm cavity, 100mm insulating concrete block inner leaf, plasterboard & skim lining , cavity insulation to be decided , total thickness 325mm . A lead flashing and cavity tray dpc and weep vents required at abutment of new roof to existing cavity wall.

It will be enclosed, but there will be an "external" door between the porch and the house.


Back to the size, with the measurements provided by @Ian H, it would mean the internal space of the porch would be 5" bigger than it is now.

Still worth it!? Hummm....

It was for me but mine was a rotten falling down timber one and the new one will be 0.5mtrs wider.
