Porch Post renewal

Hello,

I have to renew an external porch support post size 3-3/4 x 3-5/8 x 1.5 m long.
I think the current rotten one is softwood but would hardwood be better, thinking stronger and more durable? It is painted.

I'm struggling to get that size section in hardwood and i've been to all local builders merchants and also B&Q WH but they don't stock it. So thinking if you can't get it anywhere then no one uses it and go with the softwood PAR.

Would hardwood be more suitable as its load bearing and where can I buy it or just go with SW?

Use a pressure treated 4x4 fence post.

Considering that, its an option if I can get one planed but it might split as put them for a fence a few years ago they have split open. thanks

Any decent timber merchants will be able to machine one to your requirements.
