In the article it says not to mount the control unit above the cooker.

Why can't the control unit not be mounted say 20 cm above the cooker. I was intending to mount the control unit in the same kitchen unit as a double electric oven.
The control unit would be above a shelf that would be about 20cm above the top of the oven mounted on the wall.

The reason for doing this is the cooker is next to a door on one side ( no space for the control unit) and the hobs are on the other side.

I can't see a problem with what you propose. It could be dodgy having it above the hob as steam might find its way into the unit

hi clarian this is taken from the Irish equivalent of the OSG

17.2 Cooking appliances
A cooking appliance must have a local isolating switch mounted clear of the appliance and to one side - not behind the appliance.

For separate associated units, e.g. split level ovens and hobs, a single isolating switch is permissible provided the units are within 2m of one another, and the cabling to both units is appropriate to the fuse or mcb rating.

Why can't the control unit not be mounted say 20 cm above the cooker.

Because you would have to lean over a potentially hot cooker/hob to switch it off in an emergency - thus risking burning yourself.
