I drained the system down to replace some rads, refilled and bled rads.
Now the system won't even attempt to fire up (CH pump comes on and boiler fan starts, but nothing else happens) in the morning until it's been on for 45-90 mins, when hey presto it'll come on all by itself.

During the day it goes off/on OK with the thermostat, but sometimes I get a delay similar to the early morning one.

I'm having a service done tomorrow, but I don't expect the service engineer to be any help?

I don't think it's air as the pump doesn't make the kind of noise you'd expect if it was air.
