Someone came round to look at my central heating - heating comes on if you put heater and water on together, but goes off once water is hot. does not come back on even if you use the hot water - will usually light again maybe 12 hours later. guy came and looked at it, after maybe 20 mins said it needed a new 3 port zone and he would ring to fix it when he got one. Instead has sent a bill for £52 + vat for the visit, and an estimate for £225 + vat for the valave and fitting. -- Am I being ripped off - the valves seem to be about £50 from online suppliers, and should he not fit as part of the first visit?

If the head has two neon lights on it,

they stick and do exactly what yours is. The heads are available separately for £58 full retail. (ACT322) If the body's leaking badly the that would have to be changed as well, which would take a lot longer than the 10 minutes to change the head alone. They often weep a little with no real effect.
If you can undo 2 screws and connect 4 wires where the old ones were, you can diy.
If I didn't have the part I wouldn't charge for a revisit to fit this, as long as you didn't want me to go there and then for the part. Don't expect anyone to buy & supply for zero profit though. (ie don't quote an online price).
Sounds like it could wait a day or so in your case!

I always charge full retail for bits plus in this case £60 attendance and £10 revisit all plus VAT, so that would be 128 + VAT for head only. Add roughly about £60 for a complete valve change.

As most of my work is within a couple of miles of the house i don`t charge for 2 visits ,like agile i would give a price for completed job. And unlike most i charge exactly what the part costs me and any delivery charge.

£325 Is a complete rip off for this job . BG would do it on fixed price repair for 165 quid

I just did one, close to home - had to come back for the part - for £108. Too cheap then!

thanks for your replies , but I would just like to make sure we are talking about the same thing - I am afraid I am the stereotype woman on her own, not got a clue. It is a potterton suprima 30 boiler with a danfoss timer in the kitchen - there is a water tank in my bedroom cupboard, which has a few electric bits on it, then there is a big lagged thing in the attic which I think is the water tank? - the thing that needs repairing was upstairs somewhere - the boiler will usually light in the mornings if you put the water on and stays on for less than an hour - you can put on water only but not heating only. It will then not light again until maybe 12 or 15 hours later - even if you run the hot water for a dishwash and washing machin, it still does not light until later so it does not seem to come back on just when the water needs heating, which would have seemed logical - instead it just come on if it feels like it !! when it does fire up the green light comes on on the boiler, but otherwise it is red - if you try that reset button thing the green and red light are on at the same time, then the green just goes out after maybe 3 seconds and the boiler does not do anything. -- so, does it definitely sound like does need a new 3 port zone valve as they say or could it be something else, and is there a circumstance where it might cost what they are asking or is it a rip-off for sur, and if it is can I report them to anyone for trying to scam me? - I live in lytham st annes if anyone can recommend anyone in this area - thanks -Bernadette

That would be a total of £277 plus vat for a valve change, which is expensive. If he charges that for just changing the head, it is a pure rip off.

Id drain and put a Honeywell in. 165 quid plus 15 quid for fernox.

I DO like these fixed price quotes! Likw:

Add roughly about £60 for a complete valve change

I changed a pump the other day. Had to drain system and of course refill it. Changing the pump, 10 minutes, draining and refilling, 3 hours!

It all depends where the valve is and what access you have. Sometimes you have to cut the pipes and put a 22mm slip coupler in. In the above case I had to remove bathroom unit doors x 2 to remove a shelf, plus all the bottles...

PUMP CHANGE! Dont start me.

Quickest....16 mins. Longest 5 hrs and 45 mins.

Minefield with pump changes aint it. I never quote for a pump change now. Why oh why do some plumbers think the washers need to be smeared in boss white, and use ballofix vlvs expecting them to work when the pump has died?

If its a gate valve setup, I will always saw the unions off and if the valves dont hold I flap my arms like a humming bird until the new unions are on and the pump is in.

Only excitement I get now

Dave

so can I take it that the general concensus is that there is no way anyone could justify what they are quoting, especially as I assume the job is straight forward as he did not say otherwise when he came - I do not want to contend the charge is too high without being absolutely sure !!

Then being as everyone you've asked here hasn't actually seen the job you can't be absolutely sure.
