Hi All,
Let me start by saying i'm no central heating expert, but have a basic knowledge of my system,
I have a halstead best boiler operated by a potterton ep2002 programmer and a grundfos pump, the other day the pump stopped working so i assumed the the pump needed replacing as the boiler was still firing up, so I replaced the pump with a new one only to find the same problem ie. pump would not run.
So then I replaced the front of the programmer with a new one but kept the original backplate as it is the same programmer potterton ep 2002,
once again the boiler fired up and programmer lights were on but again the pump would not run.
I took the front of the programmer off and tested the live feeds to the programmer, the main live feed was fine but pump live seemed dead so i took the front of boiler off and there is a terminal block which reads , live, neutral, earth, switch live, pump live, when i tested pump live again it was dead, just as a matter of elimination i took front of pump off and tested live and it seemed fine??, has anybody any idea why the pump wont run? could it be a faulty programmer backplate?
thanks very much in advance
Rob

Test for mains power at the pump.
Test for a neutral at the pump.
If you have both of these the pump should run.
New grunfoss pumps are reliable (unless brought from fleabay)
You should have pump live at boiler during a demand.
The backplate is unlikely to be faulty.
I advise you employ a heating engineer to sort it out if the above dont help.

hi, thanks very much for the advice it's much appreciated, however I have spoken to an electrician friend who said to test the pump by removing programmer wires from pump and supply a live feed directly to it from an extension lead to see if the pump started, I did this and the pump operated no problem, so obviously the pump is ok, I then tested the live wire from the programmer to the pump with a neon tester ( at the pump terminal) and the tester light lit although it was a very weak and flickering light, I think I will take your advice and call someone in unless you have any more idea's,
once again thanks for your help

No more advice other than call someone in and ask them before they come if they understand heating electrics.
By the way neon testers are very unreliable and dont prove anything.

hi again,
thanks for your help, just had someone out to look at it (central heating engineer) friend of a friend hence rapid call out, he has told me its the pcb board as the pump is getting nowhere near its required voltage, he tested it with some sort of meter at the pump and at the boiler, so a new pcb board is needed does this make sense to you.
by the way he told me to sling the neon tester after he finished laughing!!
thanks again for all your help and advice

You will find that the contacters on the backplate get pushed apart in time and as a result they start to slightly arch and the gaps get to wide until the connection is lost on the pin (Bad Design) Had this twice, voltage will drop as secure contract drops

But in this case the pump is correctly supplied by the boiler PCB !

Quite so, but that has not deterred Mr Roo !
