hi I have a potterton back boiler, I believe its about 20 years old according the to the last engineer. it gets serviced every year. its basically makes a lot of rattling noises, which I got told is due to age and now its struggling to start up it trys about 5 times before it actually works and then about 10-15 mins later it does it all again? any ideas on solving or is it ready for a new one?

Get a decent engineer to look at it and strip service it. Boilers don't rattle just because they're 20 years old. A good RGI should be able to tell you whether it's been looked after, and what the problems are with it. Sounds like it's missing a few fasteners.
I can't tell, I've never seen it, but I wouldn't replace any boiler that can be properly repaired, unless it's economically unviable.

1st I agree with bolshy 2nd if its replaced the only back boiler that I know of (unless things have changed) that is condensing is a baxi so that is the one you would have to have. i would consider it repairable unless the heat exchanger is leaking. Find a different GSE he may be better at sorting it out, we are all different in the way we work.
