My girlfriend bought a flat in May last year. The boiler is a Potterton Puma 80e combi, and I think that it is no more than 3 years old. The hot water has worked without a problem from the day she moved in. This winter we started using the heating and apart from initially topping-up the water pressure there were no problems. However, once we started using it for longer periods, 4 hours plus, the pilot would be extinguished, and hence the heating would stop. The boiler has to be left for a period before the pilot can be relit. The central heating will run again, but for a shorter period before extinguishing the pilot again.

I assume this is due to the fact that the boiler is overheating and the ‘over-heat protection’ is extinguishing the pilot???

I have checked there is no drop in the system pressure and the pump is working properly. The only thing I can then think may be the cause is the heat exchanger. However, I can’t check this without dismantling the boiler??? From reviewing postings on this site it seems Potterton's have problematic PCB. Is this also common to the 80e?

So, to the questions.

1). Other than the solder joints and ensuring the switches are working what else do you recommend looking at on the PCB?
2). Are there any other things that I should check that may be the cause?
If so how would I go about checking them?
3). Is there a simple way of checking the heat exchanger?
4). Am I an idiot who is missing the straight forward?

I liked to thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

Thank you!
