Quite a few of the window manufacturers now offer wooden windows with the exterior covered with powder coated aluminium. The idea is that they are virtually zero maintenance for many years. The frames are made of wood and so you can have a natural wood finish on the inside and any colour you like on the outside.

Has anybody got any of these installed? If so, how have they weathered? I live in Shetland so I need something that's really going to stand up to a fair old battering from the elements.

They make very good sense and generally have a very good reputation in the trade but they are ££££'s initially although long term they should be cheaper given the lack of required maintainance and of course you have beautiful wooden windows from the inside. Velfac are the originals and are Danish or Sweedish or something like that and have a long history of being installed in scandinavian wintry conditions so I'd think they'd be quite suitable for Shetland. If memory servs they do triple glazed units as well which may be of interest. I've tried to spec them for years but they are quite ££££ as most people take the short(sighted?) term view.

Thanks for that, chaps. Some of the British suppliers, e.g. Broxwood are now getting in on the act as well. They are expensive, but I hate painting!

I am really trying to get a feel for what the aluminium powder coating looks like after, say, 10 years.
