Hi all,

In a couple of weeks i'll be installing a wired burglar alarm in my house, I don't think it matters but the model is a sterling 10 anyway.

In the instructions it says 'connect the unit to a single pole, unswitched, 3-Amp fused spur using 0.75mm2 cable'

The main unit is going to be in a small cupboard well out of the way upstairs in my house, and there is already a single socket inside the cupboard just below where i plan to mount the unit.

My question is: can i just put a 3-Amp plug on the 0.75mm2 cable and simply plug it into the socket or should i really run a fused spur from this nearby socket?

I know exactly how to run a spur but it would be so simple to use a plug and it's not like it can be turned off by accident or anything.

Thank you for any replies, they are much appreciated...

You should deffinantly use an unswitched Fused Spur.

Is it a single socket?? Would it be easier to simply change this to a spur?? Bear in mind that the spur should be as close as possible to the alarm panel itself, and ideally directly adjacent.

Thanks for the quick reply, yes it is a single socket and yes it's very close and directly adjacent.
I didn't think of replacing it with a spur. thanks again i guess that solves it then....

Just out of curiousity, why is it best to use a spur?

for one thing it means it complies with what was bs 4737
the other is to stop it from being unplugged

You must have heard the story about the hospital cleaning lady who unplugged the life-support system to put her hoover in?
