Power shower problem

Hi all,

Can someone help with an issue I have on the showers that has recently been I have installed in my house.


My shower seems to suffer from airlocks, only on the hot water side. Every morning I have to switch on the shower, and wait a couple of minutes for the pump to force the air out of the system.

I have a hot water cylinder with two outlets, one specifically feeding the showers, the other the hot water taps. I have installed a surrey flange on the shower outlet on the cylinder, yet I still seem to get air in the system.

Also there is plenty of head on the pump, it is on the floor of the airing cupboard, with the cold water systern being about 4m above it.


Any ideas anyone?

How hot is the water? Over 60 something gives cavitation.
What pump is it?
Did the Surrey flange have the plastic foot bit on the bottom of the dip tube?
It's possible that there's a micro air leak on the input side of the pump.
Once the air is cleared, does it stay OK?
Did you start with just one shower - did that do it?
Do both showers do it now?

The water is about 60 degrees, thats what the cylinder thermostat is set at.
The pump is a branded one, but i cant remember what make.

The surrey flange is a bit of an issue, its a home made one, as I couldnt find one to fit the connector on the cylinder. Its a smaller thread than the main outlet (two outlets on the cylinder, one for the shower, one for hot water) Its made from a 22mm compression fitting, with a 22 to 15 olive (the type that crushes down) allowing approx 300m of pipe to sit inside the cylinder. I didnt put a foot on it, perhaps this is the problem, if I soldered on a couple of 90 degree bends so the inlet is facing the top of the cylinder, this would stop the air creeping up the tube.

Once the air is cleared, it is ok, until a couple of days later, when it starts again. It always had two showers, but the 2nd one isnt used often, but does the same.

If there are two separate outlets on the cylinder, why do you need a Surrey Flange? Presumably the normal hot outlets are supplied by the connection on the top of the cylinder and the shower supply is taken from a connection on the side of the cylinder. Is this correct? otherwise could you explain the set-up?

Hi,

Both outlets are near the top of the cylinder, the hot water is right on top, with the shower outlet being about 150mm away on the slop of the top of the cylinder. There are two outlets to stop the shower suffering from fluctuation in the tempurature or flow, caused by others using the hot water taps.

Its not really a surrey flange thats fitted, its more of a dip stick to stop air in the top of the cylinder going into the pipe work for the shower, or thats the theory!
