Power to bathroom mirror light

Hi all,

I have a light above my mirror in the bathroom with the plug sockets on it for shavers etc but it only work when the bathroom light is on.

I bought an electric toothbrush and it's supposed to be kept on the charger but when I turn off my main bathroom light power to the mirror light is also cut which means the brush can't charge.

Can anyone offer me any solutions?

Can you take the cover off the fitting so we can have a look at the connections?
Before removing cover isolate the light.
Also were would you leave the tooth brush charger?
The socket don't look conveniently located to me.

The brush comes with a wall bracket to mount the charger on so was gonna put it on the wall at the right hand side of the mirror and tuck the lead in the back of the charger.

I'll take a photo of the wiring now.

You should also check that shaver socket can continuously supply enough power to the charger. Many shaver sockets are designed for short periods of use and depend on the shaver only being used for a short time to be ableto use a small transformer safely. Prolonged use can result in the transformer heating up to a temperature that will either trip the thermal cut out ( good quality sockets self reset ) or cause the transformer to fail.

To what end?

Clearly its live feed is a switched one from the main light, not a permanent one. The cause of the problem lies elsewhere, the connections at the shaver light will look exactly the same no matter what the other end of the supply cable is connected to.

Or did you want to see if the socket was switched along with the light? Easier just to ask, surely?

You need to find out where the other end of that cable is connected to. If there is a permanent live present, it will be a simple job of connecting the shaver live wire to this.

Have a look at the switch and the light at the wiring, and send pictures.

On a different note, some but not many shaver lights only allow the shaver socket to work if the shaver light itself has been turned on at the little pull cord. This shouldn't have anything to do with the fixed wiring in the wall though.

There is always that but would be ideal in bathroom if possible and if handy enough should I get spark in.

Well, even if you rewire the connection so that you don't need the main light on, you'll need the shaver light on all the time you want the toothbrush to be charging.

Is that the only workable scenario? What if I changed the light unit itself?
