Hi I'm looking to build a shed down the side of house, but not sure of the best way to get power to it. I know in an ideal world id have a dedicated circuit from my consumer unit with the cables buried 2 feet down , but my CU is on the far wall of the garage on the opposite side of the house. So I'd have to dig up driveway and paths to do that and would cost a fortune to repair afterwards. The only other option i cab think of is to spur off the ring main from a socket on that side of the house im not sure if that is safe and comolies with the regs? I did used to be a leccy about 20 years a go so ive forgotton most of the regs and rest have probably changed. Once it's all done i intend to get my father in law to test and certify it. I would ask all this, but he'd insist on coming round and doing the work and not exactly the neatest worker in the world

Your first question is 'what is the highest power you would want to be able to use in the shed at any one time'?

ideally id like it to be able a handle an electric radiator in case im out there tinkering in winter, as well as some lights and a couple of sockets for some light power tools. If the radiator changed things dramatically though id do without

If you spur off The ring final then your max current is 13A.
Only you can decide if that’s going to be enough for you.

I think it would be enough. I could always forget about tbe radiator i had any issues. In terms of installing cables., the shed will be about 4 feet away from the house so will have to run the cable under the path if i come through the external with SWA cable it will have quite a big bend radius and will stick out into the alleyway wont it? Or can i use some sort of waterproof enclosure , have the cable from inside the house into the back of it and the cable to the shed out the bottom running down under the ground?

Yes. Best way is waterproof box (Wiska308 is made for it).
T&E cable inside into back of box. SWA Gland ouT bottom of box.
